Sound familiar?

You’ve been meaning to make a will for years. Then you see prices online from almost nothing to hundreds of pounds, and you’re not sure what the difference is, or what you really need.

  • “Why does one will cost £50 and another £500?”
  • “Do we need two wills or one?”
  • “Is it worth paying a solicitor?”

How much does a will cost with a solicitor?

At Cramp & Mullaney, wills start from £395 plus VAT. We give you a fixed fee before we start, so there are no surprises. Straightforward wills sit at the lower end; wills with trusts, business assets, overseas property or complex family arrangements cost more. Home and hospital visits can be arranged.

What affects the cost of writing a will?

The main factors are how many people are involved, whether you need trusts, how complicated your family is, what you own, and whether you need extra help such as a home visit or tax advice. A will for someone with children from two relationships and a business takes more work than one leaving everything to a spouse.

Usually simpler Usually more involved
Everything to a spouse, then the children Children from earlier relationships
A home and savings in the UK Business assets or property abroad
Adult beneficiaries Young or vulnerable beneficiaries needing trusts
No inheritance tax concerns An estate near or over the tax thresholds

What is a mirror will?

Mirror wills are two separate wills, usually for a married couple or partners, that say almost the same thing. Typically each leaves everything to the other, and then to the same people, such as the children. They’re priced together, which usually costs less than two unrelated wills. Each person can still change their own will later.

If you have children from earlier relationships, mirror wills alone may not protect them; a trust may be needed.

Is it worth paying a solicitor to write a will?

For a very simple situation, a cheaper route may be fine. But a solicitor checks your will is valid, signed and witnessed properly, spots problems you might miss, and advises on tax, guardians and blended families. Solicitors are regulated and insured. Mistakes in a will usually surface after death, when they can’t be fixed by the person who made it.

What we see in practice

  • Invalid signing is a common problem with homemade wills. Witnessing rules are strict.
  • Out-of-date wills often cause more trouble than no will. Marriage usually cancels a will.
  • Doing LPAs at the same time saves a second conversation and gives complete peace of mind.

Common pitfalls

  • Going for the lowest price when your family situation is complicated.
  • A beneficiary witnessing the will, which can cancel their gift.
  • Never updating it.

What to do next

  1. Jot down who you want to benefit, and who you’d trust as executors.
  2. Think about guardians if you have young children.
  3. Book a call for a fixed quote.

Questions people ask

What is a mirror will?

Mirror wills are two separate wills, usually for a couple, that say much the same thing: typically leaving everything to each other, then to the same people, such as the children. Each person can still change their own will later.

Is it cheaper to write my own will?

It can be cheaper at first. But mistakes in wording or signing can make a will invalid or cause disputes, which can cost far more to put right after a death.

Do you charge VAT?

Yes. Our wills start from £395 plus VAT, and we confirm the fixed fee before we start.
